The thesis “The Role of Solar Energy on Community Development: A Case Study of Chandragiri Municipality, Machchhegaun, Kathmandu” explores the relationship between the adoption of solar energy and its impact on community development. This research is based primarily on field surveys, questionnaires, direct observation, and interviews, focusing on how solar energy improves living standards and promotes sustainable growth.
Energy is a cornerstone of modern life powering lighting, cooking, heating, communication, and transportation and is a key indicator of community progress. Today, there is a growing emphasis on clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions, with solar power being one of the most accessible and eco-friendly options.
In Machchhegaun, households historically relied on LPG, electricity, and firewood for cooking, and candles or fuel lamps for lighting during long periods of load shedding. With the introduction of solar technology, most households now use solar systems (20W to 100W) for lighting, heating water, and reducing dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels.
The study, based on data from 40 purposively selected households (38 solar users, 2 non-users), reveals that solar energy adoption has led to significant savings in monthly fuel costs, improved lighting, reduced workload, and increased leisure time. Moreover, the growing use of solar geysers highlights the community’s shift toward renewable energy for everyday needs.
Overall, the findings show that solar energy is not just a power solution but a driver of community development, contributing to economic savings, improved quality of life, and environmental sustainability in Machchhegaun.
